so. looks like Mr. Schwarzenegger is shaking things up, Hummer and all... i was not at all expecting Ahnold to be so productive and forward-thinking while in office. he is currently pushing forward into the bloody battle over the carbon dioxide emissions standards in California. think about how betrayed and enraged the right-wing auto and oil industries are gonna be. here's a better (than the last one i posted on this topic) article from Salon on what's going down in Cali. the poor, poor automakers are worried about a decrease in the horse power of their vehicles and not being able to give the consuming public "what they want" if these regulations are imposed. boo-fuckin-hoo.

in this weekends news, i, along with the rest of the "wild-eyed" leftist public, went to see Fahrenheit 911 this weekend. i walked out of the theatre thinking, isn't this exactly what i've been ranting and raving and wondering about for the last few years? ie. Bush being incompetent? or the US invading Iraq as a thinly-veiled agenda by the Bushies to carry out their own personal vendettas? or that the vast majority of the American public takes what they're spoon-fed by the mass media and believes it as truth?

not to say that i agreed with everything in the film. i think that Moore's biggest fault and failure is that by over-exaggerating and cartoonizing certain elements of the film, that it tends to de-legitimize the real issues. including a Bonanaza-style opener of Bush and friends, while laugh-inducing, doesn't really serve the actual end-purpose of the film. though all material covered was interesting, it was definitely wandering at times. i guess there's not too many people who will go to see it who aren't already decided on how they're going to vote, and i doubt it will change many people's minds. what i hope people get out of it is that they can't just sit by complacently and accept what they're told by USA Today and ABC News. i hope that people take initiative to read and research and question what the government is doing...

i thought this was a pretty fair and balanced review of the movie...

enough politics, gotta get to work... blah.

update. not much interesting to report, just an update.

just got home from the latest So Cal trip, which was super-fun as usual. Natalie graduated from UCLA on Saturday. the whole fam (sans Alex) was there, we hung out in LA for the day and stayed at the swanky W Hotel. also partied it up in Santa Monica that night. it was, all in all, entertaining and fun to spend time with the family. my Dad and stepmom even braved the bar scene and hung out with us for a while. all the young hipsters were whispering and pointing at the "old people"...

we also went to the original LA Farmer's Market on Fairfax. for anyone who hasn't been there and lives in So Cal, i highly recommend it. it is a maze of permanent, farm-stand type buildings with every imaginable type of food, sweet, and tchotchkie you can imagine. a great place to spend some hangover-nursing time on a Sunday AM.... then we cruised southward, and reconvened later that eve for a fathers day beach session. unfortunately the surf was so non-existent, we didnt get to surf. instead we played football and ate.

on Monday did some work, drove up to Huntington to meet the PR types, then down to San Jaun Capostrano for Ad stuff... had some good time with work people i talk to on the phone a lot, but dont really get to see very much. then that night, we had a gathering at Bully's for some red meat and potatoes. it was rad. we also checked out Eryn's new ride--it has lots of crazy space-ship type toggles and buttons and lights. Lauren and i got in there and started messing with stuff... too much temptation, especially when my old school partner in crime is involved.

thats about it. a non-exciting re-cap of whats goin' on... may have more interesting news to report in the semi near fture.

ps. i want to go home to San Diego.

so, just to keep beating the political dead horse, this thing rules. i'm bummed i didn't hear about it earlier. (sorry Stinky, i just can't control myself...)

"The history is: earlier this month, the web site for the Bush-Cheney campaign - the real one, paid for by MBNA America and Richard Scaife - featured a "create your own banner" tool, where you could enter your own slogan and print out your own poster, with the Bush-Cheney logo, and a note at the bottom "paid for by Bush-Cheney '04, Inc."

Democrats, of course, couldn't get enough of this.

The original sloganator accepted everything, then it started censoring profanity and words like "Hitler" "dictator," and "evil".

Nevertheless, many clever folks exploited the sloganator to their own ends before its sad demise only a couple of weeks after its birth, and its mourners assembled some of the best for the slide show.

The link below is best enjoyed with the sound on:"

today shall be link day....

this is an interesting article on Salon by Ronald Reagan's son. it's nice to see flame-throwing within the Republican party. heh. (you probably wont be able to get in directly, go to the "day pass" option and watch a short commercial....)

i was listening to NPR this morning and they were discussing California trying to tighten up its fuel emission laws. here's a good article on it... apparently Ahnold is ready to fend off the The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, who represent General Motors, Ford Motor Co. and most other automakers. they argue "that there is no economical way to filter carbon-dioxide emissions and that global-warming legislation should be done at the federal level." that's just their way of saying "we're in bed with the Bushies and the oil companies, therefore if California gets away with this, we're screwed."

and, the last topic, "Stepford Wives." ugh. horrible. it was so painful. i was expecting dark and edgy and campy. instead it was just cheesy and difficult to watch. the best part of the whole movie was when the credits started to roll and a middle-aged woman said really loudly "that was SO dumb."

this time i'll just pull a direct quote from the Salon review. "Whatever Oz had to do to "The Stepford Wives," it has unfortunately entered the no-tone zone. In his scramble to make the picture more palatable to a mass audience, he may have filed whatever teeth it ever had down to mere gummy stubs. It's something of a Stepford movie: You keep peering in there to see if there are any brains at work, and though you catch an occasional glimmer of something, it's not quite enough to convince you."
my rating: avoid at all costs.

i just wrote a long post and i think it just got deleted....ggrrr!!!!

so now i'll re-post it in blogger. again, having mixed feelings about this whole "Hello" deal.. anyways...

i'm super-frustrated at work right now. i've learned that managing creative functions is gnarly. you basically end up with making no one happy all the time. oh yeah, and i still have to get shit done. which means obtaining photos through team managers (a nightmare in itself), getting all pertinent information into the ads, making it look cool, getting it to the mag on time, managing designers, fielding off complaints, asking 18 people if they like each ad.... WWAAAUUUGGGHHH. i am so over it right now. we are expected to make shit cool and fresh, but get shut down on being creative and/or thinking outside the box. i think i'm going to fly up to Portland to have a powwow with those guys. not that they're doing anything wrong, more that i feel i need to get my shit in a pile...

other than that, not much. the moms was up for a visit last weekend which was nice. we got a ton of stuff done in the yard, its looking awesome. may play softball tonite--its been a while for that one... but i could use getting my lazy ass out of here early...

blugh.

howdy. am back from the wild Wyoming wedding weekend. it was good stuff. honestly the best wedding i have been to in... maybe forever. i can't even begin to explain how rad it was to be out there, and to get to hang with some of my most favorite people in the world. i guess i can simply say that i have not laughed that much in a very long time. i miss them so much, and it is so good for me to see how they live so entirely differently than myself, and i respect and love them totally for it. they exist on half the money that i do, and still live very rich lives. they could care less about designer denim or hip bands or swanky hotel and restaraunts.... all those things that i seem to exist upon. i think what impressed me the mmst about the wedding was how heartfelt the whole production was. many people showed up, and were spilling out of the chapel... the toasts were very sweet, and very genuine... the groom, my friend, thanked me probably six times for coming... and again, Sarah and KJ and i just laughed and laughed... it was amazing.

here's some pics, they're pretty sad... we were preoccupied with other things...

typical late-summer/early spring Paradise Ranch scenery... Friday afternoon.

Saturday--the weather the morning of the wedding... uh oh. luckily it cleared up beautifully just in time. the powers that be like Gerald and Farrah.

Sarah's dog Sam, dying to go outside. she was being babysat while Sarah got ready for her bridal party duties, and Sam was not thrilled...

KJ (otherwise known as "JJ!!!") in fine form.

me talking to the one person i did NOT want to be talking to. note the ecstatic look on my face...

that's it, wish we had more, better pics, but again, we were having too good of a time to be bothered....

xoxo,
.l
